Skylab 2016 – A New Dimension

As Colorado’s longest running electronic dance music event, Skylab 2016 welcomed a heavy hitting and diverse line-up to Colorado’s music and entertainment scene. Amongst the prime talent, performances from artist such as KSHMR, Markus Shulz, Bro Safari, and Deoro left the arenas patrons in genuine awe as they took to the stage and electrified the crowd. Curated by Global Dance, Skylab is one of Colorado’s few events that has stayed true to its raving roots.

For Skylab 2016, I was given an opportunity to experience the event completely solo, lending me a great opportunity to really zone in on what makes Skylab such a prestigious, world renowned event. As a 9 year patron to this event, I truly admire the consistency of quality that can be expected from Global Dance’s execution of the show. As you enter the arena for the event, you are encapsulated and transported to what seems to be an alternate reality, Giant neon blow up planets hang from the ceiling, setting an excellent tone and environment for the enjoyment and imagination of the crowd. This year Skylab was held at the national western complex, a change in setting as the event is typically held at the Denver coliseum just across highway I70 in Denver.

Skylab’s Launch pad (main stage) had a very healthy crowd early on in the night which would soon be packed to capacity in time for Markus Shulz trance abundant set. Amongst this, there were four other stages; Bass lander featuring such talent as Rickyxsan, Bro Safari, Crizzly and more; Explorer stage, a silent disco portal stage, and the space academy stage. The Majority of my time was spent between Skylab Launchpad (main stage), and the Bass Lander stage. Between the two stages there was a discernable difference in mood. Mainstage presented a more trance, bass house heavy vibe whereas the bass lander stage supplied a riddim heavy dubstep and trap oriented vibe. One thing can be said for both however, that was the capabilities of the audio systems were pushed to their full potential. As I drifted between the main attractions, I reflected on all of the prior years that I attended this event and the question came to my mind “what is it about Skylab that grants such a memorable experience?” as the night carried on, my answer to this question became clear. I believe there are two main reasons why this event has been so consistently successful. First, the overall inclusiveness of the event and its patrons, Colorado’s electronic dance community is clearly family oriented. having been to events all across the US it’s clear to me that there truly is no other place where the scene flourishes like it does in Colorado, you can truly feel the vibes and energy invigorate your soul as you watch everybody set the tone for what will be a memory to be cherished for a lifetime, there’s something about the unity that Global Dance has the capability of nurturing in its attendees through their meticulously coordinated events. Second, the stage production and theme decorations truly pro potentiates the show goers ability to escape reality; to truly use their imagination and transport to a new dimension of travel through space and time.

Looking back on what made Skylab so special this year, I came to the conclusion that my favorite performance of the night came from the master bass genius, Deorro. With his Panda Funk in full effect, he shocked the crowd, and truly made me ashamed that I had never seen him before. I’m simply grateful that his alleged retirement wasn’t permanent. The energy he brought to the crowd could have been bottled and cached, as the front row barriers rattled, shook, and nearly fell from the pure energy he evoked into the crowd. The entire hour and a half set, start to finish, was filled with emotion, energy, and pure joy. For this experience I’m truly grateful to Global Dance, Triad Dragons and all of the other unmentioned parties who played a part in my night of space travel. As I said goodbye to the national western complex, I became ecstatic as I contemplated what Decadance 2016 would bring. It’s clear that Global Dance has a true passion for bringing the citizens of the Colorado electronic music scene EXACTLY what they want to hear.
