Father’s Battle With Alcoholism Influenced Lia Marie Johnson’s New Song
Singer, actress, and YouTube creator Lia Maria Johnson has signed to Capitol Records and releases her debut single for the label, “DNA,” today via all digital service providers. A deeply personal song about her father’s battle with alcoholism, Johnson co-wrote “DNA” with its producer Howard Benson, co-producer Lenny Skolnik, and Sidnie Tipton. Listen BELOW & HERE.
“I was at a really hard place in my life when I wrote ‘DNA’, says Lia. It was my first time working with Lenny and Sidnie and as we got to know each other they started asking about my life. When they asked about my family, I started getting really emotional and at the end of explaining my life story I said, ‘but I guess you can’t stop DNA,’ we all looked at each other and everything clicked. We got so excited and started writing immediately.”
Lia first became known to the public via her YouTube channel, followed by roles in the Emmy-winning web series REACT, which is the most successful web series in history with close to 1 billion views. Last year, the 19-year-old San Diego native was named one of the Top 100 YouTubers in the world, and she currently boasts an actively engaged 1.6 million Instagram followers. An accomplished actress, Lia starred in AwesomenessTV/Dreamworks Animation film Expelled opposite Cameron Dallas and had the lead in the film Terry the Tomboy, which debuted on Nickelodeon to big ratings and critical acclaim. This year she starred in American Wrestler: The Wizard with Jon Voight, the TV series T@gged, and young adult thriller The Thinning, which will be released on October 12th via YouTube Red. “DNA” will be featured in the film.
