In 2016, Justin Jay made a huge impression on the scene with his Fantastic Voyage album. It was a refined departure from his previous solo work under the much-loved DIRTYBIRD brand, and indicative of his ensuing sonic adventures, which led to high-profile live band slots at HARD, Splash House and DIRTYBIRD Campout.
Stuck Inside My Head is reminiscent of Jay’s carefully curated sound while proving his evolution as a songwriter and producer to his listeners. Justin achieved a lo-fi vocal sound on “Stuck Inside My Head” with an iPhone recording and vocal processing effect rack which he created in logic; this processing-chain has since become a staple in his live show.
Fantastic Voyage has since coalesced into a label, supporting a freewheeling ecosystem Jay and friends created around their musical undergrad program at USC, and releasing a much supported (KCRW, Thump) EP from multi-instrumentalist Sam Von Horn, the debut release of Fritz Carlton’s House Boy alias and a highly acclaimed release from DIRTYBIRD staple, Ardalan.
Jay graduated USC in 2015, but gave back his diploma to study extra music classes. The last two years have seen his home base play host to raucous house parties featuring the likes of Skrillex, Justin Martin and Desert Hearts, as well as bossa nova bands, ravers, drum squads and indie-psych rockers.
It’s a collective that has radically altered Jay’s musical outlook and direction, encouraging him to experiment outside the computer, use live instruments and write personal, vulnerable songs that explore the range of his own voice. Inspired by the likes Mount Kimbie and Bon Iver, his new track ‘Stuck Inside My Head’ and most recent single ‘Can’t Hang’ see Jay take up the mike, modulating his voice through vocal effects, and stripping back the production. Though these tracks are raw and more minimally produced, they feel warm and heartfelt, and are Jay’s most human productions to date.”
