Compton-born artist Channel Tres finally released “Black Moses,” the title track to his forthcoming second EP. The song premiered earlier this morning via Zane Lowe’s show on Apple Music’s Beats 1, receiving the coveted ‘World Record’ title from the globally renowned host. The Black Moses EP drops Friday, August 16 worldwide via Godmode, the LA label and production team behind breakout acts like Yaeji and Shamir.

“Black Moses” is of course a nod to Isaac Hayes, the American soul artist who at first bristled at the sacrilege of his nickname, but then came to see it as a symbol of black pride: “Chains that once represented bondage and slavery now can be a sign of power and strength and sexuality and virility.”

For Channel, “Black Moses” is also about a complicated sense of responsibility he’s begun to feel for his family and community. The track comes reinforced with a gritty verse from rapper and former tour mate JPEGMAFIA, and psilocybe production from Godmode’s Nick Sylvester.

This summer alone, Channel has toured with Childish Gambino in Australia, performed at the world’s most regarded festivals including Primavera Sound, Movement, and Splendour in the Grass, and released remixes for Mark Ronson, Toro Y Moi, Smino and August 08. He performs later this month as part of the storied MoMA PS1 Warm Up series, then joins Toro Y Moi for an 11-city fall tour across North America. His previous singles “Brilliant N*gga” and “Sexy Black Timberlake” have received support from the disparate likes of Elton John and Anderson Paak, along with praise from tastemakers Pitchfork, NPR, Billboard, i-D, The FADER, BBC Radio 1, KCRW, and FACT Mag, among others.

Black Moses is out August 16 on Godmode.
