Felipe Tampa, better known as FTampa, is an increasingly popular Brazilian DJ who has well known DJ’s such as Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Danny Avila and many more playing his hit mixes “Kick it Hard” and “5 Days.” He is currently on a worldwide tour with sold out dates in his home country in addition to a new track coming out called “Slammer” September 29, and a collaboration with Felguk coming soon.
You gain so much support from your country, Brazil, how does it feel playing there with so much love? Where do you think you would be right now without their incredible support?
It feels so good to have such great support from my country and to play there because it’s so hard for Brazilians in the EDM industry that’s so largely dominated by Europeans, and just because we are so far away from everything. Normally people from my country are giving all their support to other countries, so it definitely feels good to have them on my side too. Without them, I would probably be in the studio right now still working on my music.
How did it feel gaining the support of the #1 DJ in the world according to DJ Mag’s TOP 100 DJ’s, Hardwell, when he played your song “Kick it Hard” at Tomorrowland 2013? What was your reaction?
Before that performance, I was feeling so down and unsure of my music, I kept working hard but I didn’t feel like I was good enough. But when I heard Hardwell play my song, it was a turning point for me, not only was I so uplifted and reassured, but more and more people started listening to my music and I got so many more fans.
You’ve become so popular in the past 2 years that you’ve been requested to play sets in big festivals such as “Burning Man” in 2013. What was it like to play there last year?
It was awesome, it felt great that people liked my music and that I made it to such a huge festival in such a short amount of time after my music blew up after Hardwell’s set at Tomorrowland 2013.
Do you prefer playing bigger venues like “Burning Man,” or smaller venues like clubs?
I love playing smaller venues. With festivals the crowd kind of takes over itself, but with clubs and smaller places, you have to take control of the room and make sure the music is good or no one will be dancing. I love the pressure to work hard and make my set good.
What is your favorite song that you’ve worked on?
My new song with Felguk and “Slammer” are for sure some of my favorites.
What inspires you to make your music?
When I’m happy I make happy songs, when I’m sad I make songs, when I’m angry I make them angry. Whatever I’m feeling, that’s what’s in my music.
Besides your collab. with Felguk and new song “Slammer,” what else can we expect from you this year?
I can name all the collaborations and songs I’m working on, but there’s so many, basically there’s alot of new music that I’m really excited to produce and share.
Aside from your DJ life and more into your Brazilian roots, and being that the FIFA World Cup was held in Brazil this year, do you like soccer?
I am a huge fan of soccer, my favorite player is Messi on the Argentinian team. I’m also a big fan of Thiago Silva from Brazil, but this year he just didn’t play his best at the Worlrld Cup, I was so disappointed in the Brazilian team this year for losing in such a stupid way. Also, I actually just played the new FIFA 2015 video game, I was up all night last night playing it, it’s amazing.
