Sunday’s at Space: Space exits the scene that it has helped to build, looking amazing, full of energy and at the top of its game in the world.

Last Sunday, WOTN had the pleasure to attend “Sunday’s at Space” in the beautiful Balearic Island of Ibiza, Spain. It began in the summer of 1989, Sunday’s used to be one of the largest nights for the world renowned nightclub; successfully continuing the party since the “summer of love” returning each consecutive summer season thereafter. The event takes Do Not Sleep seriously and literally. Originally the event would open at 16:30 and persist until the sun came up. What a way to say good morning on a Monday bright and early!
It’s no secret that Space Ibiza is an iconic venue; it boasts five rooms, four of which were filled to capacity on the night in question, Sunday (July 31st) with artists such as Ellie Cocks, Deetron, Will Taylor and Darius Syrossian, only to name a few. Swiss techno DJ, Deetron, was keeping the crowd bumping and jumping in La Terreza with tunes such as “Never Grow Old (Re-Plant)” by Floorplan and “Portrait” by Dave Angel. Paired with some intense bass and smooth transitions, his set really took off felt through the crowd and shook the entire dance floor. Meanwhile in the other room, La Discoteca, Fritz Kalkbrenner was transcending the crowd. With the setup of the room; singular white lights resembling sparkling stars and a floating cube producing mesmerizing visuals above the stage, it was easy to space out and get lost in the music. I initially walked into Kalkbrenner’s set while he was playing his own fantastic track, “Kings in Exile”. I did not expect I would end up spending a solid hour out of this world. On the Sunset Terrace, Melon Bomb was grooving through a four-hour set, beginning at 02:00 and persisting until close. I could not have been happier to hear one of my current favorite tracks dropped, “Too Much Information-Laolu Remix” by Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra, especially on the Sunset Terrace, where dancers and music lovers could enjoy a spacious and breezy smoking area while still orbiting through melodic tunes and filthy beats.
Space Ibiza owner Pepe Rosello comes to the end of his 27-year reign at the Balearic venue when he hands over the keys to the Ushuaïa group at the end of the summer. But that isn’t stopping him enjoying his final summer in charge. Although “Sunday’s at Space” may not be one of the club’s more popular nights, leaving much more dancing room with much less claustrophobia, it is definitely a night to check out. The nostalgia and history of the event draw in an older looking crowd, but do not let appearances fool you. After all, it is all about the music no age, race, gender or personality should matter as long as everyone is enjoying themselves and each other, and after attending “Sunday’s at Space” I can honestly say that in totality that was accomplished.
Thank you Space Ibiza for giving us the memories throughout the years. Boundless thanks for allowing us this summer to be a part of a historic moment, we got the final chance to say ‘we were there’, that we danced on the legendary terrace and were blown away with the sheer atmosphere of the main room. What better place to do this but at its 27th and final year.
