The final installment in Paul Kalkbrenner’s ‘Back To The Future’ mixtape trilogy was released today. Over 65 tracks and three volumes, the German techno star took us back to the tunes he heard as a young boy listening to the East Berlin Radio Station DB 64. It’s a personal snapshot of the arrival of electronic music in Berlin between the years of 1987 – 1993, and a glimpse at the music that helped shape one of techno’s biggest stars.

To make the trilogy Kalkbrenner compiled a list of more than 5000 tunes from this era on YouTube, taking the tracks off line and gradually reducing the list, then cutting and editing the chosen tracks, sometimes just snippets of a song, to fit the mixtapes. As Paul said about the music to Rolling Stone “It’s all too good to be forgotten.”
