Chuck Wonderland on the French Riviera’s burgeoning music scene, working with Larry Lynch and the one thing to die for.

Chuck Wonderland started his career in the South of France between Monaco & Cannes and is now a very well-known name in the Dubai nightlife scene. He has played with several international DJs including Sebastian Ingrosso, Martin Solveig, The Avener and Bob Sinclar (to name a few) as well as major hip-hop artists such as The Game, Akon, Rick Ross, Future and 50 Cent.

Hey Chuck, welcome to We Own The Nite. How are you?

I’m good , thank you for the opportunity to talk with an american audience , im really excited about it .

Can you tell us a bit about yourself, please?

At first, my name is Julien, I’m from Nice a.k.a. the French Riviera. My foray into the music begun at the age of 15 and took my inspirations through the retro culture that my father had with all his vinyl records (Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Super Tramp..) so many good records! I started to be DJ in nightclubs at 16. I wasn’t even allowed to go to clubs, but I was already playing (laughs)

What’s the music scene like where you live?

I am based in my hometown Nice (south of France). Actually, we have seen recently a lot of artists coming from Nice like The Avener, Feder, Hyphen Hyphen. The music scene here is growing very fast. I’m really proud of it actually.

We’re huge fans of your debut single ‘Free Like A Bird’ and recently named you one of our ‘Artists to Watch.’ What did you draw inspiration from when creating that single?

Thank you very much, it means a lot! To be honest I wanted to create something electronic and groovy, I’m a huge fan of Country and Blues since my childhood so I tried to mix this with my DJ inspiration, when Larry first showed me the cover of ‘Free Like A bird’ 6 years ago, I knew directly what to do with as it was sounding inside my head instantly.

How did you get put in touch with Larry Lynch and what was it like working with him?

First of all, Larry is an amazing singer, it was such a pleasure to work with him. He has some Jeff Buckley’s DNA that inspired me. I’m a huge fan of country, folk, and blues as I told you earlier and Larry got this similar vibes so the match of our universe was easy.

What are five of your favorite tracks so far this year?

I would say definitely
– Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus ‘Nothing breaks like a heart’
– Lady Gaga feat Bradley Cooper ‘Shallow’
– Calvin Harris feat Ragnbone ‘Giant’
-Lil Nas x Billy Ray Cyrus ‘Old Town Road’
-Purple disco machine ‘Body funk’

What’s been the most eventful show you’ve played in your career so far?

The most eventful show that I have performed so far was After Hills Festival at Iasi, Romania in 2017, the crowd was amazing, there were 15,000 people in front of me, it was crazy!! It was my first big stage and I won’t forget it so far. Can’t wait to do more of those events around the world.

What sort of equipment do you use for your productions?

I use Ableton and Fl studio for my productions , i have a lot of vst synth from the 80’s that i love and i use a sub 37 moog in my studio , my speakers are two Adam A8X .

Who were your biggest musical inspirations growing up?

I have some many different inspirations musically going from Bob Marley to Queen , Pink floyd to Michael Jackson , im also a huge fan of Hans Zimmer , i take a lot of inspiration from his work , the music in movies are for me the most emotional from all .

What are some essential items you can’t live without when you’re on tour?

Avocado, bananas, coconut water and a Nintendo to kick some ass at Mario Kart (chuckles).

What does 2019 hold in store for you? Any more new music on the horizon?

I’m working already on some upcoming tracks with some new artists, it’s really exciting and of course, we are already planning a tour.

Where do you hope to be in five years time?

Still Doing what I love most which are music producing and traveling more and more with my friends and my family. That what matters most…

Finally, if you were on death row, what would be your final meal?

My grandmother’s pizza, I can kill for this one…
