In Place Of War (IPOW) presents GRRRL – a bespoke electronic music collaboration between independent, revolutionary women artists from around the world, coming together to tell their collective stories of life, conflict, inequality and change through music. Fusing together sounds of dark techno, ghetto bass, hip-hop, dancehall, reggae, soul and electronica; GRRRL is packed with purpose and has a message to tell.

Under the musical direction of Brazil’s Laima Leyton, one half of DJ duo Mixhell and member of Soulwax, the project will feature an exhilarating mix of influential artists, including:

Speech Debelle – 2009 Mercury Prize winning rapper
AWA – African Women Arise – Zimbabwe’s Rapper Queen
Lei Di Dai – ‘The Queen of Brazilian Dancehall’
Wiyaala -‘The Young Lioness of Africa’
Nono Nkoane – Original Nu-Jazz and folk singer from Cape Town
Sohini Alam – British Bangladeshi singer;
MABE – DJ & percussionist from Caracas,Venezuela.

The project, which was funded by PRS Foundation and Arts Council England, is the organization’s most ambitious production effort to date, uniting a number of diverse cultures and languages through music.

The GRRRL tour will launch on Thursday 24th August at Folklore in Hoxton, London and will go on to tour a number of UK festivals, as well as to perform at exclusive club nights and gigs over the summer months in London, Manchester and Liverpool.

In addition to the live performances, GRRRL and IPOW will lead panel discussions and workshops focusing on women, music, war and activism. These sessions will provide an opportunity to hear directly from the members of the all-girl group as they share their stories about the impact music has had on their lives, the role of women within the music industry and the changes they intend to bring to their communities through their music.
