As we wrap up 2018, we reflect on all the best records that have graced our Spotify accounts and flooded our ears over the past year. This week’s best of 2018 featured album is Maribou State’s ‘Kingdoms In Colour,’ inspired by the field recordings the duo made around the world while traveling and touring Portraits – the response to which was phenomenal, amassing well over 80 million streams alone – the album is a ‘sonic collage’, drawing on ideas and sketches that were written and recorded in places in Asia, Australia, Morocco, America and beyond. Take a listen and let us know what you think.

Nearly, two months after releasing their new album Kingdoms In Colour, the first full-length since 2015’s breakthrough debut album Portraits via Counter RecordsMaribou State has released a series of remixes from Maceo Plex, and ahead of a forthcoming remix from Adesse Versions, DJ Tennis (co-founder of the Life and Death record label) rework on album highlight ‘Nervous Tics’ featuring Holly Walker on vocals add his classic touch, preserving the warmth and fragility of the original but rebuilds the track on a sleek, muscular 4/4 foundation.

‘Kingdom in Colour’ entered the UK album charts at #25 and features singles “Feel Good” – a collaboration born of their friendship with Houston-based trio Khruangbin; ‘Turnmills’ – aimed at raising awareness for the The Night Time Industries Association’s #SaveNightlife campaign to protect the UK’s most vulnerable music venues from closure; and continues their long-standing relationship with Holly Walker (vocalist on fan favorites ‘Steal’ and ‘Midas’) on ‘Nervous Tics.’

Beginning life in 2011 as a project between Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, Maribou State had released a string of EP’s and singles before the arrival of debut album Portraits propelled them to the world stage. Spawning a live show that took them around the globe and included a standout festival performance at Glastonbury as well as tour dates throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and America. They’ve received radio support from the likes of KCRW in Los Angeles, KEXP in Seattle, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, and Gilles Peterson and a slot on the legendary BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. Critical support came from the likes of The Guardian, i-D magazine and Vogue, with the album amassing over 80 million streams to date and drawing comparisons to acts such as The xx, James Blake & Mount Kimbie, as well earning them plaudits from the likes of DJ Koze and Bonobo.
